A bunion is a bump that forms at the base of the big toe. It happens when the joint at the bottom of the big toe becomes enlarged, and the toe slowly shifts out of its normal position.
In some cases, the big toe can also twist as it moves out of alignment. The condition is commonly known as hallux valgus. If left untreated, bunions can worsen and may lead to additional foot problems.
Most patients we see at Care Podiatry have a bone in the foot leading up to the big toe that moves sideways towards the other foot. As a result, the front of the foot becomes wider, and the joint at the base of the big toe swells out. The big toe leans in towards the other toes, which sometimes makes them bend out of shape. Bunions can be painful, but not all of them are, even if they are very big.
People usually feel pain in the toes, in the swollen big toe joint, or under the ball of the foot. The big toe joint usually hurts when you wear tight shoes. If the bulge is very big, it can even hurt when you wear loose-fitting shoes. Bunions can sometimes damage nerves in the big toe, which can lead to numbness. The skin on the sole of the foot usually becomes thick and hard.
The big toe joint can become red and swollen, and sometimes inflamed too. However, it also becomes harder to move the big toe. Bunions can increase the chances of osteoarthritis in the joint at the base of the big toe. It also causes chronic pain. They can also make you unsteady on your feet, which increases the risk of falls.
At Care Podiatry, we provide personalized treatment options for bunions depending on the condition and your level of discomfort.

I think it is great shoePosted on paols eolTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I took my daughter here for a sports related injury. The guys at the urgent care did not do a thorough exam they just listened to the symptoms and said she had shin splints. DR Maijala on the other hand really took his time to figure out what was wrong. He has a great foot-side manner. I would highly recommend him.Posted on Alvaro ContrerasTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. 10 out of 10 podiatryPosted on Manny DiazTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. For most people no, bunions do not go away on their own. The reason is that a bunion is a structural deformity of the joint. It cannot be reversed without surgery. However, some non-surgical treatments can reduce pain and slow progression. If the bunion is very small, non surgical options may stop the progression.
Yes, bunions can be hereditary. Many people inherit a foot structure that makes them more likely to develop bunions.
Bunion surgery is performed with anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. After surgery, there is swelling and discomfort, but pain is manageable with medications, elevation and compression.
Recovery time depends on the type of procedure performed. Most patients start limited walking within a few weeks. However, full recovery takes about 6-12 weeks.
