Common Ankle Problems Treated at Care Podiatry Clinics

Ankle problems can affect people of all ages. The extreme pain can make standing, walking, and daily activities uncomfortable. At Care Podiatry in Anaheim and Lakewood, we commonly see ankle issues caused by injuries, overuse, or underlying medical conditions. The ankle joint supports your overall body weight and allows you to move comfortably. Because of this, it is at risk of injury and strain. Our team looks for the root cause of ankle pain and provides effective treatment to restore mobility.

Here's the list of common ankle issues we treat, apart from other services

Ankle Arthritis

Ankle arthritis happens when the cushioning in your ankle joint gets damaged or wears away. You experience pain, swelling, and stiffness. And, these symptoms usually develop over time. Ankle arthritis usually develops when you experience an ankle injury, like a bad sprain or fracture.

Sometimes, it can occur without any reason. People with inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or psoriatic arthritis can also get it. In rare cases, it can be caused by bleeding disorders like haemophilia or from a past infection in the ankle.

Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can result from overuse, poor footwear, nerve irritation, muscle strain, or underlying joint conditions. Pain feels dull, sharp, or burning. You should not ignore consistent ankle pain, especially if it interferes with daily activities.

Ankle Injuries (Sprains and Fractures)

Ankle injuries are among the most common musculoskeletal problems. They often occur during physical activity, on uneven surfaces, or from sudden movements. The severity can range from a mild ligament stretch to a complete bone fracture. Getting an accurate diagnosis early is important for proper healing and preventing long-term instability. Some of the ankle injuries we treat include ankle sprain, ankle fracture etc.

Achilles Tendonitis Pain

Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles Tendonitis at the back of the ankle. It is common in athletes, runners, and people who suddenly increase activity levels. Symptoms can include –

Gout

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis type. It is caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. The ankle can be affected, causing sudden, severe pain. Gout can happen due to various reasons, such as a combination of genetic predisposition, medical comorbidities, and dietary influences. In most cases, a common genetic defect can cause gout to develop alongside other medical complications. Gout attacks can be extremely painful, but you can manage them well with medication and lifestyle adjustments.

Swollen Legs and Ankles

Swelling in the legs and ankles can occur due to prolonged standing, pregnancy, injury, or medical conditions such as poor circulation. Common causes include –

I took my daughter here for a sports related injury. The guys at the urgent care did not do a thorough exam they just listened to the symptoms and said she had shin splints. DR Maijala on the other hand really took his time to figure out what was wrong. He has a great foot-side manner. I would highly recommend him.
