Fungal Nail Treatment

Restore Healthy, Clear Nails with Care Podiatry

At Care Podiatry, we offer advanced fungal nail treatments to get your nails back to a healthy state. Fungal nail infections (onychomycosis) can be difficult, unpleasant, and even painful. Millions of people go through thickened, discolored, or brittle nails. If this is something you are dealing with, you are not alone.

Do not allow fungal nails to lower your self-confidence.

We have safe, effective solutions that are tailored to your needs.

What Is A Toenail Fungus?

Nail fungus is a common infection of the nail. It starts as a white or yellow-brown spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. When the fungal infection spreads, your nail thickens, yellows, and even crumbles at the edge. The toenail fungus can affect other nails as well.

The condition is also known as onychomycosis ( pronounced as on-ih-koh-my-KOH-sis). And if fungus gets between the skin of your feet and your toes, it is considered athlete’s foot (tinea Pedis).

Signs You May Have a Fungal Nail Infection

Early recognition of these signs is crucial for initiating timely treatment and preventing further damage.

  • Discoloration – Yellow, brown, or white spots on the nail
  • Difficult to Trim Nails – Nails become thicker, harder, and brittle
  • Brittle or Crumbly Texture – Brittle, nailed, those nails can crack, split or break easily.
  • Weird-shaped Nail – The nail may be distorted as if lifted off of the nail bed.
  • Persistent Smell – An incessant smell can mean infection.
  • Pain or Discomfort – It can occur due to the infection when walking or in shoes.

If you notice any of these symptoms, seeking early treatment can prevent the infection from worsening.

How Does It Get Worse

Some places, like hotel carts, poor areas, and public showers, can carry the fungi that cause such infections. In the beginning, you experience dry, thickened skin in between your toes, and then the infection spreads to the nails.

Your shoes, dark, warm, and moist, can create an environment for fungi to grow. When you suffer from small, repeated injuries or play a sport that puts pressure on your nails, these can weaken the natural seal under the nail. As a result, the fungus can get into the nail bed. For people whose feet are often wet, toenails can become more vulnerable to such infections.

The infection usually begins between the toes. The fungi produce enzymes that break down keratin, which spreads across the skin, especially in thickened areas. From there, they move under your nails, especially if the nail has been damaged slightly.

Once it is inside, the fungus then spreads under the nail and causes it to thicken and even be damaged. The infection usually affects the nail bed.
